Interesting Site for Foodies
I’ve been on a bit of a psychic streak lately. No, not a psycho streak… a psychic streak!
What ever am I talking about? Well, a thought about some random thing will pop into my head and shortly thereafter, I will run into something that has to do with that thing. Unfortunately I can’t remember any specific examples, but it would be along the lines of “Wow, I haven’t heard anything about Band X in a while. I wonder what happened to them?” Then I will be surfing the web and I’ll see a news article about “Lead singer of Band X diagnosed with crappy music disease.” Of course, I never take these things too seriously as they are probably the work of some very subtle subconscious thoughts. Some people might refer to this as a series of coincidences but being human, I am bound to believe that anything out of the ordinary is extraordinary—put that way, it sounds downright logical, doesn’t it? Ok, ok, I have a feeling I might be losing you, so I’ll try to get to the point, which may be only loosely related to my ramblings.
The other day I had a great idea. I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a website where you could collect/tag/track recipes from all sorts of recipe sources (allrecipes.com, various food blogs, etc)?” Then, based on your ratings of these recipes, it could give you suggestions for other recipes that you might like. You could then share the recipes you are tracking or search through other people’s tags. In other words, I was looking for a mix of del.ico.us and Amazon but focused on food.
Then, like magic, when I was searching for recipes to use up some of our CSA produce, I stumbled upon a new website named GroupRecipes. And, wouldn’t you know, it had just about everything I happened to be looking for. It has tags, generated preferences, and friends/groups/social stuff to help you find recipes you might be interested in. It’s pretty darned snazzy if you ask me. While you are thinking about it, go ahead and check out my profile there. While I see a lot of possibility for this website, it still doesn’t meet one of the things I was looking for, and that’s a way to pull together recipes from multiple websites. While there seems to be quite a few users and recipes on GroupRecipes, the web is a big place so some of the great recipes out there will not be part of the site. Maybe if this Ph.D. thing doesn’t work out, I can start up my dream website though
Finally, while we are on the topic of cooking… for those of you looking for a nice recipe manager for Linux, I would recommend checking out Gourmet Recipe Manager. It does a nice job of organizing recipes, creating shopping lists, and various other things. If you happen to be using Windows (bad) or Mac (better), consider this a good reason to make the switch to Ubuntu.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go harness my psychic abilities so I can have my own TV show one day. Adios.

That same “psychic” thing happens to GG all the time. It’s kind of scary. Yesterday he was just talking about how he had to learn “Yackety Sax” on the guitar, and then later the song came on his satellite radio! (And he’d never heard it on the radio before!) Once he was out with his dad on his boat, fishing, and he said it would be cool if “Ride of the Valkyries” were playing. So they turned on the classical music station on the radio, and there it was. And one time we were out at dinner at this fancy restaurant that was about to close, and GG said to me, “Lucky us,” and just then the song that was playing went, “Lucky meeeee.” Creepy sometimes!
