For obvious reasons, you don’t often see food blogs with pictures of culinary adventures that have gone terribly wrong. If something doesn’t look pretty, you don’t show it to the world. You might see some seemingly good looking food shown but with a caption saying how horrible it tasted but that is also rare. Someone needs to break this trend. That someone is me!
I present to you, exhibit A: jelly donut cupcakes from hell. Colleen was blog-hopping today and she found a picture of someone who made the jelly donut cupcakes from Veganomicon (sorry, I don’t have the link to the blog at this time). They looked delicious and we had all the ingredients necessary for the recipe so it was full-steam ahead tonight. The recipe was simple enough and everything seemed to be going well when disaster struck.
The recipe said to bake them for 21-23 minutes or until the tops were firm. 21 minutes rolled around and the tops were no where near firm. 23 minutes passed by and no real change in the doneness. 5 minutes beyond that and I had to give up. I took them out of the oven and poof, they all collapsed within seconds.
I was devastated. How could these promising little cupcakes do this to me? The answer was simple: I can’t read. The recipe called for 3/4 cups + 2 tablespoons of sugar. I misread it as being 2 cups and the rest would go down in baking infamy.
My story is a tragic one, but it is one that can easily be avoided. You must learn from this cautionary tale and always double check the ingredients you are putting in. Good luck, friends!
